Plastic is the least suitable container for olive oil.

Plastic containers are so convenient and widely used due to their affordability and lightweight nature; however, they are completely unsuitable for storing olive oil.  This is because plastic is porous, allowing exposure to factors that accelerate spoilage, such as light, heat, and oxygen.

Additionally, olive oil can corrode plastic, leading to the release of harmful microplastics into the oil, which compromises both its quality and safety. In contrast, glass and tin containers are non-toxic and chemically stable, making them ideal for preserving olive oil's freshness, flavor, and beneficial antioxidants.

Anytime we can avoid ingesting microplastics from single-use plastic containers, we protect our health and the environment.

The simple act of opening and closing a plastic bottle's screw cap can generate approximately 500 microplastic particles per twist. A 2023 study found 134,000–580,000 microplastic particles per liter in commercial vegetable oils, with over 80% smaller than 10 μm, potentially small enough to enter the bloodstream,

A study published in February of this year disclosed that the brain had higher levels of microplastics than any other organ.  On average, the studied brain samples contained about 7 grams of microplastics, which is about the same weight as a plastic spoon.

Why Tassos olive oil containers are different.

The amount of microplastics in olive oil depends on the entire packaging system, including caps, adhesives, liners, paints, and how bottles are rinsed. Every brand, every bottle, and every bottling process is different.

Tassos© Extra Virgin Olive Oils are filtered through two types of filters, ensuring that no microplastics enter the bottled oil during its journey to extraction.

Prior to bottling Tassos© EVOO, all glass bottles and 3-liter tins are cleaned and then dried with a high-powered blowing machine. There are no sources of friction caused by plastic screw caps. Any plastic parts or items within the olive oil mill are certified free of BPA.
